Everyone has things they look back on and cringe to remember! For me, it's the mistake I made when I was just starting out as a blogger. Without even realizing it, I cost myself over $50,000 in revenue with this one oversight.
Back in 2009 I decided I wanted to start a blog. Back then I didn't know too many people who had blogs and I definitely got a lot of weird looks when I told people that I was a blogger...
That blog was a big ol' flop. I think I only wrote 10 posts before dropping it, but that's a whole other story!
Fast forward to 2014 when I was starting up my 8th blog attempt and really trying to see if I could make this work. Fortunately I was able to buckle down and finally find something that I loved writing about enough to make this one stick and I've been blogging here for about 3 years!
Those 3 years have been amazing as I learned about the craft of blogging, grew my page views, and started making a full time income off of just 45,000 page views.
But even with all my successes, there was one huge mistake that I didn't even know I was making!
The Blogging Mistake That Cost Me Big Money
When I was first starting out I believed that you had to be a bigger blogger before people would start trusting you, visiting your site often, and caring about what you had to say!
For years I chased page views and looked forward to that moment when I would be "big enough" to start making some money.
I had no idea that thinking like that was completely wrong!
I didn't realize that the people who visited my site had no idea how "big" my site was... they were just looking for the information I was offering. If I had known that right off the bat then my mindset would have been completely different from the very beginning!
It wasn't until I had over 35,000 page views a month that I realized how much money I had been losing!
Eventually I took the plunge and wrote my first product. It's a 54 page ebook all about how we eat real food for under $200 a month!
Much to my surprise, it starting selling really well! People came to my site looking for a solution to a problem that so many of us have: how to save money on food without eating junk!
They didn't ask to see my Google Analytics account before buying. I offered them a solution to a problem and they were excited to buy what I was selling!
That book sells 10 copies for every 100 people that hit the page... which means that at the rate I was seeing page views before my launch I would have sold an additional 5400 copies in the last 3 years! That's $48,600 in lost revenue!!
As soon as I learned that lesson, I went on to create 5 additional eBooks and a Watercolor WordPress Theme!
I wish I could tell every new blogger this one thing.
No matter what size blog you have, it's time to create a product. Now.
Seriously, just create a product. Even if it’s just a small printable or ebook. Have something to sell on your site to those people who are already coming to you looking for answers! And of course, make sure those answers are fabulous and really meet the need.
It's not that easy, you might say... Well, actually it is if you know the trick I now share with every blogger I talk to!
Simply take a look at your analytics for the last 3-6 months, take the top 5(ish) posts and see if there is a theme.
For example, if you have 4 frugal living posts and one canning posts in your top 5 posts, it would seem that your audience really likes what you have to say about frugal living!
So take those posts and turn them into a book! Expand upon each post, create worksheets, and offer it for sale. You can start doing this today. This moment.
And if you don't have 3-6 months worth of data to pull from, look at your best post so far and create a book based on that post.
It doesn't have to be a huge book that you sell for $20... it could be a little 10 page mini ebook that you only charge $3-5 for!
Wherever you are as a blogger, whether you are just starting out or bringing in 300,000 page views a month... you need to have a product.
