About A Modern Homestead

Welcome to A Modern Homestead!

Hi y’all, I’m Victoria Pruett, the writer, and homesteader behind A Modern Homestead. And I am so pleased that you’re here!

On A Modern Homestead, you’ll find from-scratch recipes from our Southern kitchen, homesteading skills that you can pursue from anywhere in the world, and tried-and-true einkorn flour recipes your whole family will love.

I can’t wait for you to dive in and explore the site!

About A Modern Homestead

In 2014 I was living in a subdivision house with no yard and dreaming of life on a homestead.

I had grown up with grandparents on both sides who loved gardening, canning, and scratch-cooking and I knew I wanted to stay connected to those roots.

Doing everything I could to homestead in the city became my passion project. I bought food in bulk on sale at the grocery store and canned it in my tiny kitchen. We grew herbs and tomatoes on a small deck in the backyard, and I worked hard to cook all of our food from scratch, even on a tight budget.

Soon, my passion grew to the point that I knew I wanted to help others learn how to live a more traditional life, even in the city. So, A Modern Homestead was born and I began sharing my journey online with the world.

Today, millions of people visit this site every year to make my recipes and use my gardening tips to turn their homesteading dreams into a reality; it’s both incredibly humbling and a responsibility that I take very seriously!

Our Homestead

My husband and I live on an 8-acre homestead in central Texas with our son, my parents, and my husband’s parents. It didn’t start out with all of us together, but we sure are glad it ended up that way!

  • We currently have 2 A2 milk cows, 37 Plymouth Rock hens, 1 rooster, 32 fruit trees, 147 blackberry bushes, a 1/2 acre vineyard, and some of the most beautiful oak trees you’ve ever seen.
  • We grow a 1/2 acre garden from March through November each year, which allows us to water-bath and pressure can about 1500 quarts of food, above and beyond what we eat fresh and feed to our animals.
  • In August of 2021, we broke ground on our dream house and in March of 2022, we moved in! You can see our home tour here!

A little bit more about our family…

I’m a born and raised 10th generation Texan raising the next generation in Central Texas with my husband of almost 20 years and our amazing son.

We live on about $30,000 a year, by choice (though we make more than that now), so that we can spend our time together instead of working to pay for things we don’t care about.

In 2015 (after 10 years of marriage, what a long wait!) we welcomed our little boy into the family and made the decision that I would leave my job as a kindergarten teacher to stay home with him.

As amazing as that was, it only lasted a short time… In January of 2016 my husband lost his job and our sole source of income disappeared overnight. It was terrifying at first, as I was afraid that I would lose the opportunity to stay home with our son. But it has turned into the biggest blessing we could ever imagine!

Today we both work from home and are blessed to be bringing in more money for our family than we made together both working for other people!

And, through my blog, I get to help others learn more about how to live a frugal and simple lifestyle while making money online so they can pursue the lives they’ve always dreamed of!

Fun Facts About Victoria

  • I tried on many different careers before finally settling into blogging and homesteading. I’ve done everything from working at a Video Game Company to building websites for divisions of Homeland Security – I’ve worked as a full-time seamstress and spent 5 years as a kindergarten teacher!
  • I LOVE to make handmade gifts for people and I’ve knitted over 30 sweaters, with only 1 being for myself.
  • I have never had seafood prepared in a way that I enjoy. I’ve even had fresh fish caught and prepared the same day in Hawaii and I still didn’t like it :-( I want to! I just don’t…
  • I’m a 10th-generation Texan and my ancestor came to Texas alongside Sam Houston.
