Whether it’s making homemade ranch seasoning, learning how to make brown sugar from scratch, or going so far as to grow our own food… I love finding ways to avoid the grocery store when possible! These homemade muffin liners are a great addition to your tricks to be more self-sufficient by using what you have on hand!
DIY Muffin Liners (No Store Trip Required!)
I made our favorite mini muffins again last week—blueberry, chocolate chip, and banana bread—but completely forgot I was out of liners. With no time (or desire) to run to the store, I grabbed some parchment paper and got to crafting!
And you know what? Making your own muffin liners is so easy! If you’ve got parchment paper, scissors, and something cylindrical that fits into the muffin pan you’re using, you’re all set.
What You’ll Need
- Parchment Paper – Regular kitchen parchment paper works perfectly.
- Scissors or Kitchen Shears – To cut your parchment into squares.
- A Forming Tool – You need something to press the parchment into the tin. I used a metal flashlight that fits snugly into the muffin cups. You could also use a spice jar, small shot glass, or even a marker with a flat top—just test what fits!
- Muffin Tin – This works with any size muffin pan!
Instructions
This process is so simple, you’ll be thrilled to have it in your back pocket in case of muffin emergencies! While I still enjoy the pre-made liners, this trick has saved the day more than once!

Step 1 – Cut Your Squares
Cut your parchment paper into squares. For a standard mini muffin tin, 4×4 inch squares work well, but feel free to adjust depending on the exact size of your tin or how much overhang you like. 5×5 inch squares can be used for regular muffin tins, or 6×6 for jumbo muffins. You don’t want the squares to be too tall, or they will be hard to fill. Adjust as needed!
Step 2 – Find a Form
Find an object that fits perfectly into the size muffin tin you are using. This could be a spice bottle, a shot glass, a small cup, or even a flashlight! Just make sure that it hits the bottom completely and isn’t small inside the muffin cavity.

Step 3 – Form the Liners
Center a square of parchment on the top of the object you chose, and then bring your hand around the square and down the side of the object. While pressing down, use your fingers to crease the edges of the parchment against the sides of the object. It doesn’t need to be perfect—once the batter is added, the parchment will hold its shape just fine!

Step 4 – Repeat
Keep going until all your muffin tin cavities are lined! Fill them right away, careful not to get any on the line edges, and bake as normal!
A Few Tips
- Just make what you need. You don’t want to make these in advance, as they will get crumpled and not look as nice. So, just make the number of liners that you need at the moment.
- No need for perfection. The rustic look is part of the charm, and they’ll hold their shape once filled with batter.
- Grease if needed. If your parchment is prone to sticking or you’re using a super-sticky batter (like banana bread), lightly spray the liners for easy release. I’ve never greased mine, and they release just fine, but it may be needed depending on what you’re making!
